The Bahamas - More Geography Facts

Over 700 islands make up The Bahamas. The archipelago begins 60 miles off the eastern coat of Florida with its major cities Miami, Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, and stretches southeast for 500 miles.

The country ranges from the Northern islands Grand Bahama and Abaco which are very close to the coastline of Florida, over Nassau in the middle to the mostly unknown Southern islands Mayaguana and Great Inagua.

The estimated land area is approximately 5,400 sq. miles. The largest islands are Andros with approx. 2,300 sq miles, followed by Abaco (649 sq. miles) and Great Inagua (596 sq. miles). The smallest islands are Bimini (9 sq miles) and Berry islands (12 sq. miles). The main islands New Providence with the capital Nassau has 80 sq. miles land area.

The estimated population of the country is approx. 340 000. The most Bahamians live in New Providence and Grand Bahama.
